ABSTRACT

Compassion fatigue is a common mental health problem experienced by rescuers. It is a phenomenon of psychological discomfort caused by the lack or excess of empathy in the implementation of relief. The main manifestation is post-traumatic stress disorder, the reduction of interest and ability of empathy, and the increase of job burnout. Oncology nurses have a higher incidence of compassion fatigue due to greater pressure caused by the complex work environment. The current interventions on the compassion fatigue of oncology nurses abroad, such as Self-Care, Compassion Fatigue Resiliency Program, Mindfulness Training,Educational Intervention, arts therapies, and others, can help improve nurse's quality of service and physical and mental health. However, there is a relative lack of domestic research, and nurse researchers should carry out such studies more actively to provide a reference for the improvement of nurses' mental health situation.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To describe and classify the medication errors that occurred during a 6 months period in oncology, hematology and pediatrics. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a 6 month time period sample. The formulations selected were evaluated and classified according to error type, and the existence of patient-related effects were verified in the clinical notes. Findings: A total of 440 formulations were reviewed and 54 errors (12.3%) were identified, with the most frequent being related to prescription. The severity of these errors was potentially harmful. A total of 17 adverse events were identified in patients, and were not associated with deaths or disabilities. Cyclophosphamide, trastuzumab, dexamethasone, among others, were associated with most errors. Discussion: The overall error rate found is comparable with those in the world literature. Despite the complexity of the prescription, these errors remain avoidable, but a prevention program is needed that focuses on educational activities with participation by specialists, pharmaceutical chemists, nurses, as well as patients. © 2014 Instituto Nacional de Cancerología. ABSTRACT

A controlled trial with 2 body electrical impedance commercial analyzers was carried out (Bodystat® 1500-MDD and BioScan®98) at the Pediatric Oncology Department of the Southern Children Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from September to October 2009, for which an in vitro simulation with gauges of each device and an in vivo study in 32 apparently healthy adults and 32 children with different conditions were conducted. Electrical resistance and capacitive reactance were estimated with both analyzers, and impedance module and phase angle were also calculated. The two-means Student's t test for paired samples and the Bland-Altman method were used as statistical criteria. There were not significant differences between the two analyzers by introducing correction factors for electrical resistance and capacitive reactance; therefore, it is possible to use either to characterize bioelectrically apparently healthy individuals and patients with different conditions.
